A concert of string duos performed by Rebecca Miller and Laura Thompson, featuring two premieres and a variety of contemporary and classical works.
Rebecca Miller
Rebecca Miller is a Boston-based violist, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While in Milwaukee, Rebecca studied viola with Lewis Rosove. She received her Bachelor of Music degree at the Boston Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, where she continues to study with Rictor Noren.
Rebecca has performed with varying ensembles throughout the greater Boston area, including the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of Indian Hill, New England Symphony, New Bedford Symphony, Cape Ann Symphony, Belmont Festival Orchestra, Apollo Ensemble, New England Philharmonic, Ambient Orchestra, Boston Opera Collaborative, MassOpera, MetroWest Opera Company, and Commonwealth Lyric Opera. In addition to classical orchestral performance, she can be seen performing for pit orchestras, contemporary ensembles, studio orchestras and recording studios, and chamber music ensembles. Rebecca has been a winner of the Boston Conservatory chamber music competition, 2015, and a second place winner in the Boston Conservatory String Honors Competition, 2017.
Rebecca is committed to the educated performance of contemporary works, and dedicates much of her time to rehearsing and performing new works. She has performed for several contemporary ensembles, including the Boston Opera Collaborative's Opera Bites, Chimera New Music Project, JANVS Project, The Fourth Wall, and Ambient Orchestra, as well as countless premieres of new works on the Composer Recital Series at The Boston Conservatory.
Laura Thompson
Laura Thompson is a violinist, violist, folk fiddler, and musical wanderer who finds herself at home in a wide variety of musical traditions. She especially enjoys working with composers on new works of music, collaborating with other musicians on chamber music projects, and discovering forgotten fiddle tunes from dusty recordings.
Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Laura studied with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra violinist Jeanyi Kim and graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Music in violin performance from Northwestern University, where her primary teacher was Gerardo Ribeiro. While in Chicago, she also was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and performed with the contemporary music groups Ensemble Dal Niente and Accessible Contemporary Music.
She holds a Masters of Music in violin performance from the Royal College of Music, London, where she studied with Berent Korfker and co-founded the new music group ExplorEnsemble. While in London, she premiered and recorded a number of new compositions, and performed at venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Cafe OTO, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. As a solo Irish fiddler, she represented Britain in the All-Ireland Fleadh- the world championships of Irish music.
Freelancing for the last several years in Milwaukee, Laura performed frequently with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra, was a viola substitute with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and played frequent chamber concerts in Milwaukee and Madison.
Now based in New York City, Laura is performing with ensembles including the Curiosity Cabinet, Camerata New York, the Bronx Opera Company, DCINY, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, the Westchester Philharmonic, and teaches violin and viola at the United Nations International School. She also recorded and performed as a violist with the NYC-based contemporary music string quartet The Rhythm Method.
