Callithumpian Consort: “Callithumpian Soloists” ≈ March 7th / 9pm

The virtuoso soloists of the Callithumpian Consort play a “sequence” of modern solo instrumental classics for flute, clarinet, voice, violin, trombone, cello and piano.

The Callithumpian Consort is dedicated to the proposition that music is an experience. Founded by pianist and conductor Stephen Drury sometime in the 1980’s, the Consort is a professional ensemble producing concerts of contemporary music at the highest standard. Stephen Drury created the Callithumpian Consort in the belief that new music should be an exciting adventure shared by performers and listeners alike, and that the brand new masterpieces of our day are beautiful, sensuous, challenging, delightful, provocative, and a unique joy. Our audiences bring fresh ears to sounds never heard before; they bring their experiences from rock stadiums, jazz clubs, and internet electronica to the concert hall. They hunger for the new.

Callithumpian’s repertoire is the new and unusual, encompassing a huge stylistic spectrum from the classics of the last 100 years to works of the avant-garde and experimental jazz and rock. It is grounded in the musical discoveries of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Zorn, Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman, and Iannis Xenakis. Active commissioning and recording of new works is crucial to our mission. We have worked closely with composers John Cage, Frederic Rzewki, Helmut Lachenmann, Michael Finnissy, Jonathan Harvey, Lee Hyla, John Zorn, John Luther Adams, Franco Donatoni, Lukas Foss, Christian Wolff, Jo Kondo and many others. Recordings are available on Tzadik, Mode, and New World Records.

A Late Night Piano Meditation with Holly Bowling ≈ March 21st / 10:30pm

An all-improv late night piano concert with Holly Bowling

Time for something different. Back in 2015, I started to release some of my late night practice sessions under the title “Late Night Meditations.” These entirely improvised solo piano sessions were unedited and unfiltered and allowed me to explore where the music would lead me completely free from a predetermined form. This will be the first time I take this idea out of my living room and explore it in a live setting.

*Please note: This will be a different performance than my other shows. I will not be playing the music of Phish or the Grateful Dead at this performance. This show will focus entirely on what usually happens in the space between the songs. Come with an open set of ears and a sense of adventure.*

We are going to turn the lights way down for this and encourage people to get comfortable. Please bring a cushion to sit on.

Lexie Roth + Arlen Roth Band + Holy Golden ≈ April 14th / 10:30pm

Lexie Roth

Lexie Roth releases MOVE ME, a new EP featuring 5 original tracks written, performed, and co-produced by Roth. The EP also features performances by artists Lilah Larson, Ezra Miller, and Josh Aubin of the band Sons of an Illustrious Father; Nick Shopa, of Brooklyn-based Papertwin; and Mara Carlyle, London-based singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist.

Arlen Roth

Arlen Roth (born October 30, 1952 in New York, U.S.) is an American guitarist, recording artist, performer, tutor and author. His first solo album won the Montreux Critics’ Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year in 1978. He was a regular columnist for Guitar Player magazine from 1982 to 1992. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Bob Dylan, Danny Gatton, John Entwistle, John Prine, Kate Taylor, James Taylor, Livingston Taylor, John Sebastian, Rick Wakeman, Paul Simon (as well as Simon and Garfunkel), Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Sonny Landreth, Levon Helm, Bill Kirchen, Duane Eddy, Steve Morse, Albert Lee and Phoebe Snow. Roth is a Telecaster enthusiast, and has written the book Masters of the Telecaster, which details the techniques and licks of many famous Telecaster guitar players. As a solo artist Roth performs frequently with his younger daughter, Lexie Roth, a recording artist, performer and songwriter in her own right. He was greatly influenced by Clarence White of The Byrds’ string bending style, but at the age of 14, he did not know White had invented a “B-string bender” for his Telecaster, so Roth developed a new style of doing this with fingers alone. He thus innovated many string-bending styles on the guitar, simulating a “pedal steel” guitar. He is also an innovator in the use of “harmonics” within guitar playing.

Holy Golden

Holy Golden is the multifaceted musical world of Leslie Schott and Andrew Valenti. From euphoric dream-pop to lo-fi garage rock, their sound is refreshingly dynamic while maintaining an unparalleled specificity. Holy Golden’s creative process is a labyrinthian breadcrumb trail fueled by their deepest sorrows and brightest fantasies, which ultimately leads them towards their imaginative kingdom of sound.

The two met serendipitously during a full moon lunar eclipse on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. They recorded their first two albums in Los Angeles and Detroit and are now recording their upcoming album from a haunted ballroom in Rhode Island.
