The Franklin County Fiddlers, founded and directed by Steve Muise, is a very unique school music program within the state of Maine. FCF is a multi-stylistyic fiddle band, comprised of 12 fiddlers, flute, cello, piano, guitar, bass, and accordion. The fiddlers have delighted audiences throughout and beyond the state of Maine. It is an extension of the almost 400 students that study stringed instruments in RSU #9 (the Mt. Blue Regional School District). We learn and perform a wide variety of traditional music styles. Members learn mostly by ear, through rote teaching in the folk tradition. Music that has been passed on from generation to generation is preserved in FCF.
The fiddlers have travelled to perform in Boston, throughout Eastern Canada in Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. FCF has also performed in Nashville, New Orleans, and in Ireland. FCF also regularly performs locally for aspiring young students to nursing homes and veteran’s homes. In January 2019, FCF had the honor of representing public school music programs by performing for the gubernatorial inauguration.
