Duo
In the late 1990s, Taylor Ho Bynum (then on trumpet, now primarily a cornettist) and Eric Rosenthal (drums) began a duo project that took a radically intimate improvisational approach to the classic jazz songbook. Exploring standards like Mood Indigo, My One and Only Love, and The Nearness of You with scrapes and whispers, hints of melody and fragments of forms, they recorded two albums: and only life my lush lament (1999) and Cenote (2002), relatively early additions to their now extensive discographies.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first recording, Bynum and Rosenthal will reunite for a special duo performance at the LilyPad in Inman Square on Thursday, July 11 2019. Opening the show, Bynum will premiere a new quintet, with a bass-heavy instrumentation featuring old and new collaborators, featuring Rosenthal on percussion, Junko Fujiwara on cello, and Nate McBride and Mali Obomsawin on acoustic basses. The music starts at 8pm - with archival copies of the now out-of-print duo albums available for sale.
