Three Cambridge based bands Myrtle, Melissa Weikart, and Both of Us perform experimental original music that hovers around jazz, folk, and rock.
Myrtle
Myrtle is a collaborative and experimental songwriting project, formed in 2018 under the mentorship of Esperanza Spalding. Collaborators Claire Dickson and Camila Ortiz unite their disparate artistic backgrounds, drawing from jazz, contemporary classical, indie rock, and performance art to create fresh, emotive songs grounded in an embodied and profoundly collaborative practice.
Melissa Weikart
Melissa Weikart is a vocalist, pianist, composer and educator based in Boston, MA. After graduating from Tufts in 2016 (B.A. Music and Spanish), she pursued her Master’s degree in Contemporary Improvisation at New England Conservatory, where she studied with Carla Kihlstedt, Anthony Coleman, Dominique Eade, and Hankus Netsky. Melissa co-founded Students Advocating for Gender Equality at NEC, and was awarded an Entrepreneurial Musicianship grant to recompose the album Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys for an all-female ensemble. In December 2017, she released her debut EP “Coffee,” and she is currently working on a full-length album.
Both of Us
Both of Us is a duo that performs co-written compositions and improvisations. They draw inspiration from modern jazz, contemporary classic music, and poetry. Weaving together their diverse influences, they've created a repertoire that is both intimate and inviting. Through their ever-evolving repertoire, they explore different ways of approaching their instruments, and often find themselves pushing each other out of their comfort zones and onto a path of constant discovery.
