Souq El-Jum3a
Souq El-Jum3a is a group of immigrant musicians and artists from the Arab world, presenting contemporary original Arabic music by going into the past to enrich the present in a spirit of collaboration. Souq El-Jum3a’s songs aspire to preserve the essence of Classical Arabic music while making new original songs. The project strives to collaborate with other Arab artists, in the Arab world and in the lands of exile, to create a free space for creative explorations through the mediums of song-making and music videos. The name of the project takes its meaning from (Friday Market) which is largely a spontaneous market (or souq) that assembles every weekend on the holy day of Friday in many cities across the Arab world, souqs where people from all walks of life gather to socialize and engage in a process of exchange of products—some new, some old that had to be refurbished and made fit for today. Artists come to our “souq” to collaborate and create. A modern day Souq Okaz for song making, if you will.
