Gapi

Gapi (Gayageum & Piano), is a duo project developed to meld cultural styles of Korean and American music in a lyrical and improvised manner. The project centers around Morrin and Kim’s backgrounds in Jazz and Korean Folk respectively and is inspired by the freedom of improvised traditions, spanning rich modal harmonic landscapes and complex rhythmic grids, and challenging the traditions of both the Gayageum and Piano.

This ensemble started as a friendship and turned into a full fledged collaboration between us during the spring of 2016. The project is unique in combining music traditions from America and Korea through our shared musical interests and pedagogy. We are creating new music that challenges the technical range of the instruments as well as our respective cultural aesthetics and opening a dialogue about what cross-cultural communication means - something we sorely need nowadays. We spent numerous hours together writing music and orchestrating for our instruments, combining through-composed music with improvisation. We seek to send a message of connection, communication, and beauty.
