Elan Mehler has released nine albums as a leader. Discovered by DJ/Producer Gilles Peterson at a hotel in Switzerland, Elan’s 2007 debut on Gilles’ Brownswood Recordings, “Scheme For Thought,” was listed in Jazzwise’s Top Ten Records of the Year and garnered a four star review from MOJO Magazine. 2009’s “The After Suite,” “a masterpiece with a capital ‘M,” –All About Jazz, was hailed as “…positively rhapsodic” by Time Out. 2010’s collaboration with the Oklahoman singer-songwriter Adam McBride-Smith, “Half Seas Over,” built “…a productive relationship between two genres of music that few jazz artists other than Bill Frisell have managed to splice…” –The Guardian. Elan’s solo piano debut, “Early Sunday Morning” came out in 2014 on Challenge Records. “Mehler is a major talent…his gift is to channel atmosphere with a sensitivity and love of his material that shows in every note.” –Marlbank
Elan’s latest release, a duo record with Becca Stevens titled “Pallet on Your Floor,” came out in December of 2020. Other recent projects include a project co-led with trumpeter Dave Douglas titled “If There Are Mountains,” which was listed as a best record of the year by The Arts Fuse and called “An outstanding collaboration” by Downbeat. In 2019, Elan released TJ and the Revenge, featuring Bill Frisell, on Little Lost Records.
In 2016, Elan founded Newvelle Records with partner Jean-Christophe Morisseau. They have since produced over 40 records featuring musicians from the pinnacle of the jazz world including: Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci, Frank Kimbrough, Rufus Reid, Dave Douglas, Bill Frisell and many others. 2020 featured a new project of New Orleans music with legends Irma Thomas, Little Freddie King, Ellis Marsalis and more. Through Newvelle Records Elan has commissioned and produced a number of events around the world including the week long Jazz Festival “Newvelle Live” in 2019, a short story from acclaimed novelist Douglas Kennedy and a short feature film about pianist and educator Billy Lester.
