Two sets of creative, on-the-edge improvised music featuring lots of the finest musicians in the northeast.
Joe Morris, Ben Stapp and Dan O’Brien play free music that synthesizes a broad range of musical language and modes of interaction into a kaleidoscopic sound world that is unique to each performance. The music exists in a constantly-morphing state between different continuums – some examples being interactive vs. disassociated, vigorous vs. static, bombastic vs. placid – a situation that provides opportunity for constant engagement for both musicians and listeners. The trio’s first album, Amphibious Not By Nature, was released in January 2022 on Phonoemulsion Records.
Dan O’Brien’s Standards of Dysfunction is a brand-new large ensemble and will perform a spontaneous amalgam of modern jazz arrangements, conducted improvisation and free music. Rife with masterful jazz players and creative improvisers hailing from Boston, Connecticut and New York, Standards of Dysfunction parses out territory between some of music's major polarities; composition and improvisation, tonality and non-tonality, process and product and many more are always in play as the music unfolds.
