Will Fredendall / Diego Martinez Duo:
Will Fredendall is a flutist, improviser, and composer from Doylestown, Pennsylvania. His accomplishments encompass a wide variety of musical styles, and his influences come from many genres, including free improvisation, western classical music, and jazz. Will is able to synthesize a unique sound from these influences. Will's musical career started with a heavy influence in classical music. A member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra for two years, he was given the opportunity to learn from members of the Philadelphia Orchestra such as Jeffrey Khaner and to play at the Kimmel Center. While at the New England Conservatory of Music, he developed his classical sound in the studio of renowned soloist Renee Krimsier. At a young age, Will discovered jazz, and this is what led him to the New England Conservatory of Music. A senior and the only jazz flute major at NEC, Will has had the opportunity to study with great names such as Jason Moran, Jerry Bergonzi, Frank Carlberg, and Ran Blake. Will's most expansive repertoire comes from the world of free music, where he has spent time studying under Joe Morris. Through Morris' teachings, Will has begun the long journey of attempting to understand and appreciate the music of great improvisers such as Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, and Eric Dolphy. While it is the newest area in which Will has begun work, he has already recorded and released a solo album, Inspirations, where he uses influences from all genres to share stories from his life.
Originally from Memphis, double bassist Diego Martinez has utilized their extensive background as a classical performer to inform their improvisational language. Influenced by drone music, as well as American free jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Charlie Haden, and Pharoah Sanders; Diego seeks to expand the vocabulary of the double bass in a context of complete creative freedom that acknowledges the tradition of innovation within radical musical movements throughout history.
Diego and Will both discovered their love for playing music in a freely improvised setting around the same time, in large part thanks to the many duo sessions they shared during their junior and senior years at NEC. This is the first time they will be performing for a live audience in this configuration, and it's an incredibly special event for both of them!
