Old Budapest - vocal with piano

  • The Lilypad 1353 Cambridge Street Cambridge, MA, 02139 (map)

Kristof Darvas will play and sing Hungarian coffee house standards from the last 100 years. His distinctive piano style is a unique synthesis influenced by Hungarian and European antebellum café music traditions, theater music, New Orleans jazz, rhythm and blues, The Beatles and the 1960s, as well as Eastern European folk music and the world of klezmer. He is primarily active in the Budapest theater scene and the alternative music world, regularly performing at literary evenings, jazz cafés, and silent film screenings. As a composer, he mostly sets poets' verses to music.

Kristof was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, where he
lives to this day. He comes from a family of musicians and theater
people (Darvas Szilard, Darvas Ferenc), and his first gigs were also in
the theater. In addition to composing and playing in shows, he led the
orchestra of actors at the Katona Jozsef theater in Budapest. He plays in
several bands, like Rutkai Bori Banda, specializing in children's shows,
or the Baltazar Theatre where he directs special needs children. He is the
pianist of the Fonó Trio, and he often plays the accordeon at various
cultural events. Every Monday, you can find him in the Jederman café,
entertaining the guests. He accompanies singers of varied style, Jo Zsuzsi
being the most well known among them.
