This Music Presents: Anthony Coleman w/Gabe Boyarin + Eric Rosenthal

  • The Lilypad 1353 Cambridge Street Cambridge, MA, 02139 (map)

This Music (TM) Presents is a Boston musician’s initiative to recognize the creativity of many who haven’t been given the stage as leaders, often younger than the Jazz scene veterans; those with acknowledgment who can create a new project and musical ideas; and the unsung “gems” who aren’t in the public’ eye and deserve to be. The emphasis is on the freer forms, the adventurous (to help find a “home”).

Set 2: Anthony Coleman trio with Gabe Boyarin (guitar) + Eric Rosenthal (drums)

Anthony Coleman is a composer-keyboardist who has performed and recorded throughout the world. Gabe Boyarin is a Boston-based composer, improviser, guitarist and electroacoustic musician studying at New England Conservatory of Music. Their work focuses on indeterminacy, juxtapositions of organic and synthetic, constructivist approaches to sound development, non-hierarchical points of view, and deconstructionist approaches to time, form, and gesture. They are inspired and influenced by the American experimental tradition, diasporic Judaism and Yiddish culture, phonetics and phonology, and Asian artistic and philosophical traditions (especially north Indian, Japanese, and Indonesian traditions). In March 2024 they released the CD “Bloom Interaction” in collaboration with composer and koto/cello player Marie Carroll. They have recently organized concerts in Boston and New York benefitting victims of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. They reside in Jamaica Plain with their partner and frequent collaborator Nathan Bernstein, a sculptor, visual artist, and linguist.

Eric Rosenthal, drums, has developed a prominent career playing jazz and improvised music, recording and performing internationally with the big band Either/Orchestra, Roswell Rudd, Anthony Braxton, blues artist David Maxwell, John Voigt, Bhob Rainey, Jack Wright and others. He is currently a member of the Charlie Kolhase Quintet, the Dave Bryant Quartet (Dave is a former member of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time) and the avant klezmer groups Naftule's Dream and Paul Brody's Sadawi based in Berlin.
