Patrick Lee Purdon is a Boston-area jazz vocalist whose unique style combines a warm, mellifluous tone with virtuosic bebop improvisation.  This evening at the Lilypad Patrick joins forces with Kevin Harris (piano), John Lockwood (bass), and Ilya Blazh (drums).  The “experiment” will feature new arrangements from Patrick and Kevin that are sure to surprise and delight.

The first jazz album that Patrick remembers listening to was “John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.” It featured Hartman’s smooth vocals alongside Coltrane’s intense, virtuosic playing, an aesthetic combination that continues to inspire Patrick today. Shortly after, Patrick heard Miles Davis’ “Birth of the Cool,” which opened the door to Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Miles himself.  Bird’s embodiment of pure distilled creativitiy in particular made a huge impression on Patrick.  He also felt a connection to the refined swing of Miles Davis’s first quintet, and to the delicate bossa nova of Joao Gilberto and Tom Jobim.  Patrick Purdon’s artistic mission has been to create a coherent whole from these disparate influences, to blend his mellifluous vocals with bebop/post-bop improvisational fire.

Will Patrick succeed in this mission?  Can he capture, ever so briefly, that essence of pure creativity? Now, a minute from now, or tomorrow? Will it come out right, will it mesmerize and delight?  Stay tuned to find out…

This is the Patrick Lee Purdon Experiment.
