Carmen Marsico & Zafarán is a new group exploring Mediterranean music with a focus on the mountainous region of Basilicata as well as Gypsy migration patterns.
Award winning Italian vocalist, songwriter and dancer Carmen Marsico hails from the mountainous and wild region of Basilicata. A dramatic landscape that also inhabits her heart and can be heard in her music. She has immersed herself in the traditions of the south of Italy and tirelessly dived deeper into research of the origin of sound. Together with the group she has created a new bold direction, a crossroad between the old and the new, between history and imagination. The group crosses time and boundaries, and incorporates traditions from all over the Mediterranean with a focus on the folk traditions of Basilicata as well as Gypsy migration patterns.
"Zafarán" comes from the word Arabs used to describe the ground down long red peppers, typically cultivated in some areas of Basilicata, into a powder. It was then adopted into the dialect in Basilicata to indicate this kind of pepper.
