Luther Gray was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His family moved to Washington, D.C., where, as a teenager, he started playing drums in punk rock bands. After college he returned to D.C. to be mentored by jazz legend Mickey Newman. Early in his career, he balanced the indie rock circuit (Tsunami, Jenny Toomey) with straight-ahead jazz performance alongside icons like Butch Warren, Webster Young, Cecil Payne and Buck Hill.
After relocating to Boston in 2000, Gray became a vital fixture in the avant-garde, free jazz, and modern jazz scenes. At the same time he toured and recorded with Indy rockers Jenny Toomey, Geoff Farina, and the band, Ida. He notably fused punk energy with free improvisation in his critically acclaimed band, Lawnmower. Today, he leads several projects—including the Luther Gray Sextet and Drums and Horns Trio—maintains a long-running weekly residency with Jerry Bergonzi at Cambridge’s The Lilypad, and is a member of the renowned avant-garde group, The Fully Celebrated Orchestra.
Over a 25-year career, Gray has toured globally and collaborated with luminaries such as Anthony Braxton, Jim Hobbs, Steve Lantner, Henry Grimes, Taylor Ho Bynum, Joe Morris, Mat Maneri, Joseph Daly, Jeff Parker, Bill Pierce, Georg Grawe, Roy Campbell, Sabir Mateen, Ben Monder, Kenny Werner, Bill Lowe, Pandelis Karayorgis, and countless others, releasing albums on premier labels like Clean Feed, HatHUT, AUM Fidelity, Atavistic, Driff, NotTwo, Atavistic, Twisted Village, ESP and many others. He has duo projects with guitarist Wayne Rogers; pianist, Steve Lantner; trumpeter, Greg Kelley; trumpeter, Forbes Graham; saxophonist: and Timo Shanko, to name a few. Luther also performs locally and tours with rock musicians Chris Brokaw, Clint Conley, Hilken Mancini, and the bands Dome Room, Scrawl, and Consonant.
Beyond performing, Gray is a dedicated music educator who teaches privately and has instructed ensembles at institutions including Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, and MIT.
